His absence was due to illness

  • 1 -due to o owing to?-

    Nota d'uso
Due to e owing to significano entrambi “a causa di”, ma siccome due è un aggettivo, alcuni sostengono che dovrebbe essere usato solo in funzione attributiva, come ad esempio in: His absence was due to illness, la sua assenza era dovuta a (causata da) malattia. L'uso di due to in una frase come Due to illness, he was unable to attend, a causa della malattia, non riuscì a essere presente, è considerato scorretto; quando serve una locuzione preposizionale si preferisce owing to: We left earlier than intended owing to the deteriorating weather condition, siamo partiti prima del previsto, a causa del peggioramento delle condizioni metereologiche. Tuttavia, l'uso di due to al posto di owing to è sempre più frequente, soprattutto in contesti informali.
